Join Us On The Broad Highway

Actually we were fooling ourselves, for deep down in every man, woman, and child, is the fundamental idea of God. It may be obscured by calamity, by pomp, by worship of other things, but in some form or other it is there. For faith in a Power greater than ourselves, and miraculous demonstrations of that power in human lives, are facts as old as man himself.

We finally saw that faith in some kind of God was a part of our make up, just as much as the feeling we have for a friend. Sometimes we had to search fearlessly, but He was there. He was as much a fact as we were. We found the Great Reality deep down within us. In the last analysis it is only there that He may be found. It was so with us.

We can only clear the ground a bit. If our testimony helps sweep away prejudice, enables you to think honestly, encourages you to search diligently within yourself, then, if you wish, you can join us on the Broad Highway. With this attitude you cannot fail. The consciousness of your belief is sure to come to you.

Update:

Plans are coming together for this year’s Convention, and the schedule is beginning to take shape.  The latest news is the main speakers have been selected.  The opening AA meeting Friday night will feature Jay W. from Lake Balboa, CA.  The speaker at the Saturday night meeting after the Banquet will be Tina L., from Reseda.  Father Terry R., from Los Angeles, will be the speaker for the Convention’s closing meeting on Sunday morning.  In addition to the speakers in the big meetings, the AA Young People will have their own speakers, who are Noah D., Susan A busy night at the convention.B. and Melissa.

Al-Anon will have their speaker meetings again this year, beginning with an Alateen speaker panel on Friday night, featuring Hailey, Laura and Chuck.  The AA/Al-Anon split pitch, with Kathi and her daughter Melanie, will be part of the Saturday Luncheon.  Al-Anon will also offer High Tea with their long-timers, Ann, Betty, Mary Pat and Raissa.

The food this year will once again rise to the high standards we’ve come to expect from the Elks’ kitchen.  This year’s banquet will feature your choice of New York Strip or White Fish accompanied by salad, rice pilaf, vegetable stir-fry and finished off with the ever-popular Mud Pie.  As usual, the main hall will open at 6 PM for you to select a table for you and your friends.

Don’t forget to come to the Friday night dinner, which begins at 5:30.  The menu will consist of salad, roast chicken, baked potato and green been almondine.  The Elks really know how to put on a meal, and the opportunity to enjoy the food along with the fellowship opportunities afforded by the casual atmosphere shouldn’t be missed.

And if you’re looking for something to do between Friday’s dinner and the speaker meeting, come enjoy the hilarious play, “Snow White and the Seven Defects”.  Talented AA cast members will insure a fun lead-in to the opening meeting.

There are still plenty of opportunities for you to get involved in this year’s convention. There are several committee positions still open, and of course, the convention would not be possible without the help of all our volunteers, so that’s another way you can participate. Not only is it a way to be of service, but it’s a lot of fun, and an opportunity to work with and get to know a good group of sober men and women. Come to the next meeting, 6:00 P.M. on August 12, to find out more (click “Participate” for directions).   Only three more meetings before the Convention!

And for everyone in the recovery community, mark the weekend of October 22-24 on your calendar. Plan on a weekend of fun, fellowship, good food, and strong messages of the programs of Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon. We look forward to seeing you there. Between now and then, bookmark this page and check back regularly for the latest news. We'll update the site as soon as information becomes available.  We're already lining up this year's speakers, planning menus and coming up with ideas to make this convention a special one.  Don't miss it.

The Santa Barbara Convention is not affiliated with Alcoholics Anonymous or any other group.
